St. Richard’s Episcopal School is the only Episcopal school in the state of Indiana. All are welcome and can find belonging at St. Richard’s. Since 1960, St. Richard’s has been providing a diverse and international student body with an excellent academic foundation rooted in Episcopal values. Our students are encouraged to ask questions, use reason, and learn wisdom, compassion and humility as they practice the skills they need to be global citizens. Students learn to have honest and respectful dialogue across lines of disagreement and difference as they prepare for lives of leadership and civic responsibility. Faculty at St. Richard’s build lasting relationships with students and families as they implement inquiry based and talent development curriculum to meet students where they are and encourage students to stretch and grow in a safe space. Students at St. Richard’s learn the French language and about the global cultures who speak French from age 3 through grade 5. In grade 6, they are able to choose French or Spanish and all students take Latin. Students benefit from our location in the heart of Indianapolis with many field experiences and partnerships for learning and service. Our most recent grade 8 class is a good example of the impact a St. Richard’s education has on our graduates. St. Richard’s Episcopal School provides financial assistance to families based on demonstrated need. For the 2025-2026 school year, St. Richard's awarded over $950,000 in financial assistance. What are the standard school day hours? Our school day begins at 8:00 a.m. and concludes at 3:20 p.m. Does St. Richard's offer before/after school care? Does St. Richard's offer afterschool activities? St. Richard’s Episcopal School is committed to providing a variety of extended day and enrichment opportunities that expand and enrich student life outside the classroom. Many of our students' families chose to take advantage of the dynamic extended day program at St. Richard's. The extended day program provides students a safe, comfortable, and familiar environment and opportunities for individual growth that are congruent with the school’s mission of instilling knowledge and values for a lifetime. The program includes clubs and service opportunities that add to the overall educational experience. Programs are divided into two sections, one for Early Childhood and another for Lower and Middle Divisions. Morning care is offered from 7:00 – 8:00 a.m. Aftercare is offered from 3:30 – 6:00 p.m. Full-time early childhood tuition includes the cost of before and aftercare. Holiday Care is offered for families who need care for their children when school is not in session. Early Childhood Extended Day The Early Childhood extended day program is organized and has students rotate through stations that consist of an activity, a snack, and play time. Our daily focus is art-based, with students creating a designated craft as their activity and group games. Students cook foods/treats at an age-appropriate level. Students are exposed to various activities such as swimming (EC), tennis, dance, art. Lower and Middle Divisions Extended Day Students are able to enjoy a snack, time to work on homework and study, time for physical play, library, and clubs. In addition, families are able to sign up for specific enrichment offerings. Enrichment Offerings St. Richard’s carefully chooses a wide variety of extended day opportunities that engage the diverse interests of our students. These enrichment activities are led by St. Richard’s teachers or outside organizations who bring programs to St. Richard’s. Examples of enrichment activities include French, art and play, karate, gymnastics, yoga, Harry Potter, creative writing, kids cooking, music lessons, pottery, coding, chess, ballet, handwriting, cursive writing, literature clubs, piano lessons, and swim lessons for EC students. In addition to our formal extended day program, students are able to participate in Indianapolis Independent School League (IISL) athletic competitions and intramural sports. Is there a uniform or dress code? For Pre-Kindergarten, there is no specific dress code or uniform. Junior Kindergarten through Grade 8, the students have a uniform which features a green blazer and tie beginning in Grade 1. How many children attend St. Richard's? How many students are in the average classroom? St. Richard's has approximately 380 students enrolled for the 2025-26 school year. Our students benefit from individual attention and strong relationships with teachers due to our class sizes of 10 to 18 students. All early childhood classes have both a lead teacher and a teaching assistant. Lower division grade levels have a teaching assistant or share a teaching assistant. Does St. Richard's have a homework policy? Early Childhood – No homework is assigned in Pre-Kindergarten or Junior Kindergarten. Kindergarten will have some take home activities or reading to do on occasion. Lower Division homework is assigned to reinforce, supplement, and complement material covered at school. Levels of homework are developmentally appropriate to the age and grade level. Middle Division students can expect homework each day. Assignments range from long term projects, to reading and annotation, to math problems and studying for assessments. Each day ends with a study hall period which allows students to work on their homework, ask their teachers questions, and learn time management skills. Teachers collaborate to ensure students are not overwhelmed with more than 2 assessments in a day. Does St. Richard's offer support for students with special needs? St. Richard’s strives to promote a nurturing community for students to become independent learners, to become self-aware, and to maximize their unique talents. Teachers use a variety of instructional strategies to meet the needs of each individual learner. Small-group differentiation, hands-on manipulatives, leveled materials, and whole-group learning are used as part of everyday instruction. Our small class sizes, maxing out at 18 in Grades 1-8, are optimal for the learning process. We provide academic and social support that help all students achieve their academic and developmental potential. Two full-time Learning Support Specialists provide in-class support as well as small group instruction for students in all grades. Social and Emotional Support St. Richard’s strives to be a highly diverse and welcoming environment in which all students feel accepted and supported. We make every possible attempt to create a learning environment that engages students’ strengths and effectively addresses areas needing growth including topics related to social and emotional development. Our licensed school counselor provides age-appropriate classroom lessons with topics ranging from relationships, conflict management, naming feelings to suicide prevention, internet safety, and leadership. Students are able to meet with the school counselor one on one or in small groups for help with academic goal setting and planning, college and career readiness or grief, anxiety, and divorce. Our counselor works in partnership with students, parents and outside providers to encourage our students’ success. What specialty classes / extracurricular activities does St. Richard's offer (gym, art, language, sports etc.)? All students at St. Richard’s take courses in math, English, science, history, and world language. In addition, students participate in physical education, art, music, divinity, library, Latin, and a critical thinking/ problem solving class in grade 5. St. Richard’s Episcopal School provides a comprehensive athletic program designed to develop healthy bodies, provide a lifelong love of sports, develop sportsmanship amongst its players, and produce athletes capable of playing team sports in high school and beyond, whether for enjoyment or for competition. In Grade 5-8, the students compete in soccer, volleyball, basketball, cross country and track. All traveling teams except volleyball and basketball are co-ed and compete against other local independent schools through the Indianapolis Independent School League (IISL). St. Richard’s also follows a no-cut policy, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to participate. Prior to Grade 5, St. Richard’s offers intramural basketball and soccer for students in JK-Grade 4. Coaches are frequently parents who volunteer for the opportunity. The intramural programs are each divided into two divisions, each shaped in accordance with the different sizes, physical capabilities, and knowledge of the students. This program introduces competitive athletics focused on teaching young athletes key lessons: introducing general knowledge of the sport, learning to play as a team, embracing good sportsmanship, and learning to extend their efforts. Along with improving their athletic abilities, they develop a positive self-image as the coaches nurture their perception of physical activity as an enjoyable experience. Clubs offered in Middle Division: Students are invited to propose and lead clubs that are of interest to them. St. Richard’s Episcopal School works diligently to ensure the physical, social, and emotional wellbeing of the students. A Student Resource Officer from the Indianapolis Police Department is on duty from 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. and then after school until all members of the community have left at the close of the day and the building is locked. A licensed school counselor is employed by the school to focus on our student’s social and emotional development and well-being. All access points to the school are gated and locked. Visitors must sign in via Securly at the front entrance. After arrival and dismissal times have closed, both the front door and outer gymnasium door are locked. St. Richard’s has several licensed School Safety Specialists on staff kept up to date on best practices through the Indiana Department of Education and the Department of National Homeland Security. Emergency Procedure Plans are posted in each classroom. Regular fire and tornado drills are scheduled monthly. St. Richard’s also has procedures in place in the event of a lock-down and means for contacting parents in case of such a situation. CPR training and certification are required yearly for faculty and staff. School personnel are required to participate in Safeguarding God’s Children. Middle Division faculty are QPR (a suicide prevention program) certified. The school employs a school nurse to address minor injuries, distribute medications, and assess whether parents should be contacted. Efforts are also made at St. Richard’s to create a safe social-emotional environment. Faculty and staff meet regularly to discuss the social and emotional needs of each child.
