If you're looking for a place to explore nature, take a hike through Beanblossom Bottom Nature Preserve. This nature park, located about an hour south of Indianapolis in Bean Blossom Township, is a great place to appreciate the natural beauty and diversity of Indiana, especially in the summer and fall, when everything is blooming. This nature preserve was closed for a while because a tornado went through it and damaged a lot of the trail. But a renovation was completed in spring 2019, and the trail loop has been completely restored. A Haven for Birds and Wildlife Beanblossom Bottoms is a wetland preserve, so there are swamps all around the park. You'll see wildlife that like to call marshy land their home, like frogs and dragonflies. You'll also see lots of beautiful greenery, trees and flowers. Beanblossom Bottoms Nature Preserve is also a popular destination with birders, and for good reason. The nature park has been designated a state Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. You're likely to see lots of birds here, so bring your binoculars! Beanblossom Bottoms Hiking Trail This unique nature preserve has an easy hiking trail, even for young kids who tire easily. The hiking trail is about 2.5 miles from start to finish, and it makes a loop through the park. The trail starts off on dirt, but then it turns into a raised, plastic boardwalk. Because the boardwalk is plastic, it can be slippery after a rain, so keep that in mind. The boardwalk trail takes you right over and through the swamp, so you can get an up-close view of everything. Parking and Other Info Parking is at a premium at Beanblossom Bottoms Nature Preserve. There are exactly eight parking spaces in the parking lot, but you can also park along the side of the road if the parking lot is full. There are no restrooms or other services, so plan accordingly. Beanblossom Bottoms Nature Preserve is located at N. Woodall Road in Ellettsville, in Monroe County. The park is open every day from dawn to dusk.
