The extent of my musical talent reaches back to 7th grade when I learned to play Hot Cross Buns on the recorder. I had no motivation to learn an instrument so instead I sang and danced (because it was far easier). My husband on the other hand, played for Purdue’s drumline and has three guitars hanging on the wall next to his drum set. Like many parents, we want to give our daughter every opportunity to follow whatever dream she has in life, including hours of migraine induced drum session. One of my favorite hidden gems in Indy is the Rhythm! Discovery Center where she is able to play all sorts of percussion instruments.
Rhythm! Discovery Center is divided into three categories – wood, skin and metal. Throughout the museum there are exhibits explaining the history of percussion instruments, how sound works, and how to play the instruments. The displays inform guests in the form of digital media, museum signage, hands-on play and demonstration of various percussion instruments.
My biggest highlight was the soundproof rooms that host a drum set and other percussion instruments for people to rock out in and even record their music. I’m also excited to sign up for the Behind the Glass Doors Tour where visitors get a chance to see hundreds of rare and unique percussion instruments, including one of the first metronomes. Rhythm! Discovery Center also hosts an array of events from Birthday parties to corporate events to weddings. How cool would it be to have your ceremony in the Arts Garden and go play on instruments during cocktail hour at Rhythm! Discovery Center?!
All ages welcome to visit and get their groove on at this hidden gem. We will definitely be visiting for the new exhibits that open in May – Found Percussion (think STOMP) and an exhibit on electronic music. Who knows, maybe I’ll start learning an instrument. It’s never to late to learn!
