Indiana State Museum’s Camp in a Box

Families looking for a creative outlet for their children over fall break can find the answer in a box — the Indiana State Museum’s Camp in a Box, where kids can learn about changing leaves, make snot slime, practice yoga, experiment with art techniques and much more.

The six different kits, geared toward students in kindergarten through grade 6, are designed to engage children in learning through a variety of hands-on design challenges, step-by-step experiments and art creations. Each box includes five activities, all the materials needed, and an activity guide with easy-to-follow instructions and ways to continue exploring.

Families can choose from among several themes. The available Camp in a Box kits include:

Fall Fun: Fall into fun exploration of the autumn season. Learn about the science of leaves changing color and create some themed decorations to help celebrate the cooler season.

Grossology: Burp, sneeze, hiccup! Yeech! Explore why you have snot by making snot slime, find out just how long your small intestine is, and take part in a few more experiments as you explore all the gross things your body does.

Artful Antics: Create art through messy experiments, like painting without a paintbrush and experimenting with splatter art.

Relax, Reset: After learning and growing so much during the fall semester, enjoy your fall break as you relax and reset. Campers will make stress balls, practice yoga, create art and learn different ways to relax when they need a break.

Solid, Liquid, Gas: Experiment with the sates of matter with five different science experiments. Warning … you may get messy!

Ready Set Launch: Explore what it takes to propel objects through the air and build catapults, rockets and more.

The cost for each Camp in a Box is $30 for museum members and $35 for non-members. Kits can be ordered online at indianamuseum.org/camp and picked up at the Indiana State Museum (650 W. Washington St., Indianapolis), from 4:30-6 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 9 and 16. Shipping is available for an additional $10.
