Join The Hamilton County Health Department and their Health Education Specialist, James Ginder, for a Q & A on Vaping.
What is vaping, and how is it different from smoking?
Vaping involves inhaling vapor produced by electronic cigarettes or similar devices, which typically contain nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. Unlike traditional smoking, vaping does not involve burning tobacco, but it still poses health risks, especially for young people.
What are the health risks associated with vaping for adolescents?
E-cigarettes are the most used tobacco product among youth. Vaping can lead to nicotine addiction, affect brain development, and increase the risk of mood disorders and respiratory issues. It can also serve as a gateway to other substance use.
How can I tell if my child is vaping?
Look for signs such as unusual odors (often fruity or sweet), frequent nosebleeds, dry mouth or throat, and changes in behavior or social circles. If your child has new accessories like USB-shaped devices, they may be using vape pens.
What should I do if I suspect my child is vaping?
Approach the topic calmly and without judgment. Have an open conversation about the risks and pressures associated with vaping. Itโs important to listen to their perspective and provide support.
What are schools doing to try to prevent vaping?
Most Hamilton County middle and high schools have installed vape detectors in their restrooms. When a detector picks up a vapor it sends a text to school administrators identifying which bathroom its located in. Students caught vaping are often offered intervention classes or referred to a treatmentย
Are there resources available for parents to better understand vaping?
Yes, many resources are available, including educational materials from the Hamilton County Health Department, Breathe Easy Hamilton County, and other health organizations. These resources can help parents stay informed about vaping trends and prevention strategies.
