DIY: Homemade Play Dough

Homemade play dough is a favorite in our home.

My kids love the feel and flexibility of play dough, inviting them to be creative and have fun using their imagination. And now you and your little ones can make your very own together!

Your play dough can be made in as little as 10 minutes right at home. Chat with your kids to see what colors they’ll want most before you get going. The kids love it and you will, too! Let’s get started and remember: Be creative!

Homemade Play Dough

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup salt
  • 4 tsp. cream of tartar
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 tbs. of vegetable oil
  • 5-7 drops of food coloring, glitter, essential oils optional
  • Quart size plastic bag
Instructions:

Over medium heat, add flour, salt and cream of tartar to a large pot. Mix water, food coloring and oil in a separate bowl. Next, add water mixture to the pot. Stir until the dough has thickened and begins to form a ball.

Remove from heat and place on wax paper. Allow the dough to cool slightly and begin to knead until smooth.

Tip: If you are concerned about the food coloring staining your hands, use gloves or place the dough in the quart size bag and knead.

Optional: Bling out your play dough with glitter! Add ¼ cup of glitter to the bag and knead for a little extra flair.

Play dough can be stored in an airtight container or Ziploc bag for up to 6 months.

Have fun!
