Join The Hamilton County Health Department and their Orthopedic Surgeon of Riverview Health, Dr. Kyle P. Stephenson, for a Q & A on Backpack Safety.
Why is backpack safety important for children?
Improper use can lead to various musculoskeletal issues in children. Heavy or unevenly packed backpacks can strain a child’s back, shoulders, and neck, leading to pain and potential long-term damage. Proper backpack safety can help prevent these injuries and ensure that children stay healthy and active.
What are the key features to look for when choosing a backpack for a child?
Look for one that is lightweight, has two wide, padded shoulder straps, and a padded back. It should also have multiple compartments to help distribute the weight evenly. The backpack should be the correct size for your child, with the bottom of the backpack resting at the curve of the lower back and not more than four inches below the waist.
How much weight is too much for a child to carry in their backpack?
A child’s backpack should not exceed 10-15% of their body weight. For example, if your child weighs 60 pounds, their backpack should not weigh more than 6-9 pounds. Overloading a backpack can lead to poor posture and cause back pain, so it’s important to monitor the weight regularly.
How should a child wear their backpack to avoid injury?
Children should always use both shoulder straps and ensure the straps are adjusted so the backpack fits snugly against their back. The backpack should rest evenly in the middle of the back and not sag below the waist. Wearing a backpack with one strap slung over one shoulder can cause muscle strain and imbalance.
What are some common signs that a backpack might be causing problems for a child?
If your child complains of back pain, numbness, or tingling in their arms or hands, or if you notice red marks on their shoulders, these could be signs that their backpack is too heavy or not being worn correctly. Take action by lightening the load or adjusting the fit.
How can parents ensure their children are packing their backpacks correctly?
Encourage your child to pack only what they need for the day and use all the compartments to distribute the weight evenly. Heavier items should be packed closest to the back, and items that are not needed should be left at home.
