Head to the Indianapolis City Market

One of the best times to really appreciate an agriculturally rich state such as Indiana is during the warmer months, when the farmers markets open and you can see, smell and taste all the bounty that the local land has to offer.

The Indianapolis City Market farmers market is one of the largest farmers markets in Indy, and one of the most well-known. Now in its 21st season, this is the place to find fresh produce, including corn, potatoes, root vegetables, mushrooms, onions and pumpkins, as well as farm-fresh eggs, artisanal cheeses, baked goods, fresh-cut flowers, honey and handmade items.

The Indianapolis City Market farmers The City Market farmers market is located in the heart of downtown, between Alabama Street and Market Street. More than 50 local Indiana and Midwest vendors set up shop every Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. during May through October. And not only can you load up on food and other goodies, but this farmers market also offers live music and entertainment from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

One of the best parts about this farmers market (and all farmers markets, in general) is the samples. Kids love samples (and, let’s be honest, so do adults!). The last time my kids and I visited this farmers market, we took advantage of all the samples available to us. We tasted the usual strawberries and apples, but also foods that they might not have been willing to try at home, like goat’s milk cheese and mild salsa. A farmers market is a great place to expand your kids’ palates and introduce them to different food in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

If you’re looking to help the homeless while you shop, the farmers market has set up a program to do just that. Buy 2, Give 1 is a gleaning food program set up by the market that helps provide food and healthy meals to people in need. Shoppers are encouraged to buy additional fruits and vegetables and donate them at the City Market tent located in front of the City Market House’s Market Street doors during market hours. All donated produce will be given to one of three downtown homeless missions.
