What do your kids think of the police?

A relative of mine (a police officer) recently posted this message and picture on Facebook.

“Parents please don’t tell your children that the police will take them away if they are bad. We want them to come to us when they are scared…not be scared of us.”

Makes sense to me.

I tell my kids that police are here to help us and keep us safe. I hope they understand that. When they see people getting arrested, I tell them it’s because someone broke a rule. A serious rule. When we had things stolen out of our garage, I told my kids the police would help catch the bad guys. When someone was shot in our neighborhood and there were police everywhere, I told my kids the police were taking the bad robber away to jail.

Why in world would you tell your kids the police are there to take them away if they are bad? Am I missing something?
