Celebrating the Season at the Athenaeum Christkindlmarkt

The Athenaeum Foundation is set to host its annual Christkindlmarkt from November 29 to December 22, 2024, in the Rathskeller Biergarten at 401 E. Michigan Street, Indianapolis. This festive market offers a blend of German traditions and global holiday celebrations, featuring vendor huts with holiday wares, German cuisine, live entertainment, and events like Krampusnacht, Sankt Nikolaus Fest, Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, and Hanukkah.

Sunday, December 1 | 11 AM – 1 PM: Celebrating Kwanzaa

About Kwanzaa
Kwanzaa is a seven-day celebration of African roots and unity, observed by people of all faiths. Anchored by the principles of Nguzo Saba, this special event will feature traditional music, including drum circles and dance performances, as well as storytelling that shares the rich culture and traditions of Kwanzaa.

History & Traditions
Kwanzaa was established in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, inspired by first-fruits festivals in Southern Africa. The celebration runs from December 26 to January 1 and emphasizes seven principles: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), and others. Iconic symbols include the Kinara (seven-candle holder), Mazao (crops), and Kikombe cha Umoja (unity cup).

Saturday, December 7 | 3-8 PM: Krampusnacht

About Krampusnacht
Krampusnacht, rooted in European folklore, features the mythical demon-goat Krampus, who punishes the naughty. This family-friendly event (3-6 PM) will showcase a theatrical storytelling performance and a visit from Krampus himself. The evening program (6-8 PM) will dive deeper into this dark yet fascinating tradition.

History & Traditions
Krampusnacht is celebrated on December 5th, the eve of St. Nicholas Day. People don Krampus costumes and roam the streets in parades. Activities at the Athenaeum include storytelling, mask-making, and exploring the folklore behind Krampus and Sankt Nikolaus.

Sunday, December 8 | 1-5 PM: Sankt Nikolaus Fest

About Sankt Nikolaus Fest
Experience holiday nostalgia at this family-friendly event. Children can meet Sankt Nikolaus and have their names added to the Sankt Nikolaus book, a tradition dating back to 1985. The event is filled with outdoor activities and festive cheer.

History & Traditions
Sankt Nikolaus, a 4th-century bishop, is celebrated worldwide for his generosity. The day features singing, dancing, and celebrations. At the Athenaeum, Sankt Nikolaus will be adorned in bishop’s robes, carrying his golden staff.

Sunday, December 15 | 11 AM – 5 PM: Celebrating Las Posadas

About Las Posadas
Las Posadas commemorates Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem with festive processions, music, and cultural activities like ornament making. Enjoy mariachi bands, Latin pop singers, and traditional treats.

History & Traditions
Celebrated from December 16 to 24, Las Posadas involves nightly processions, caroling, and the breaking of piñatas. Families also enjoy tamales and atole, honoring a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican and Latin American culture.

Sunday, December 22 | 11 AM – 5 PM: Celebrating Hanukkah

About Hanukkah
Celebrate Hanukkah with performances by the renowned klezmer band 65th Street Klezmorim. The event features family-friendly activities and delicious holiday treats.

History & Traditions
Hanukkah marks the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Traditions include lighting the menorah, eating latkes and sufganiyot, and playing dreidel. This eight-day celebration centers on themes of faith, perseverance, and cultural pride.
