Q&A with ICC Summer Music Camp:
What makes ICC Summer Music Camp unique?
The ICC offers inspiring music for audiences that also provide ICC singers with the satisfaction of achieving their artistic goals and the experience of performing before a live audience. In addition, children and youth who participate in the ICC’s programs gain increased cultural awareness through opportunities to perform. Dare to Dream Summer Music Camp concludes each camp session with a concert featuring camp participants who will sing with the ICC after just four days of rehearsals and close the ICC 2020-2021 Concert Season. Performances are scheduled to be Thursday, June 10, 2021 at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University in Indianapolis and Friday, July 23, 2021 at Cornerstone Lutheran Church in Carmel.
Beyond the artistic excellence created by its singers, the ICC has a positive impact on children and youth where they feel accepted, respected, responsible, and challenged. Young people flourish when they are engaged in activities that are valued, meaningful, and worthwhile. Children and youth are empowered to pursue and achieve excellence when they are in a safe environment among peers and are guided by caring adult role models. The Dare to Dream Summer Music Camp offers campers an opportunity to experience ICC and nurture their love of music in a fun environment. If campers wish to continue with ICC, the camper can audition for an ICC choir during the summer camp.
What activities are offered at ICC Summer Music Camp?
Campers in grades 3-8 will not only create music in a choir, but will also experience movement, recorder, and Orff instrument classes. Campers in grades 1-2 will have a full day of musical activities tailored toward their age group with plenty of play, a consistent staff, and a nurturing atmosphere.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir typically has 3 teachers for every 10-15 student campers.
How much time do the campers spend outside?
Campers spend time inside and outside (50/50) during the camp, weather permitting. In addition, students will be socially distanced, will wear masks, and the ICC will be following safety protocols and procedures to ensure every child is safe while having fun at summer camp.
Does the camp provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
As part of the camp fees, the Indianapolis Children’s Choir will provide each camper with snacks daily as well as a t-shirt for the final performances. We ask that parents provide a sack lunch for their child to bring to camp during lunchtime each day.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
The camp offers a variety of music education throughout the day, including:
- Choral Instruction
- Music Theory
- Movement Class
- Orff Class
- Recorder Class
Schedules will vary based on class size and camp safety protocols. However, all campers will have choir rehearsals, lunch, and fun musical activities throughout each day of camp.
How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir staffs its Summer Camp with adult music educators who teach the campers about music, artistry, leadership, and community. In addition to our professional music educators, the ICC has adult and student counselors who assist with each area of camp. The students who serve as camp counselors are ICC’s student leaders from some of our top choirs. All students and adults are trained in advance of serving at the Summer Camp.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
The Indianapolis Children’s Choir Summer Camp may accommodate students with special needs. If you have a child with special needs, please contact the ICC for more information and how to register for the camp.
