Q & A with Crooked Trail Adventures:
What makes Crooked Trail Adventures unique?
We are a travel based adventure program, with trips in the Rocky Mountains, Desert Southwest, Appalachians, and the Northeast. All programs are staffed by professionals with 10+ years experience in outdoor programming and education.
What activities are offered at Crooked Trail Adventures?
Our trips include rock climbing or a ropes course, hiking, backpacking or sea kayaking, biking, and whitewater rafting.
What is the camper-to-counselor ratio?
Our maximum ratio is 5 participants per guide. Programs which include a backcountry component (backpacking or sea kayaking) are 4:1.
How much time do the campers spend outside?
24/7
Does Crooked Trail Adventures provide lunch/snacks or do parents need to provide them?
All meals are included in the cost of the program.
What is the typical daily schedule for campers?
Our days start early to maximize time participating in outdoor activities. We generally hike, climb, bike, or paddle from 10:00- 1:00, when we stop for lunch. Afternoon activities continue through dinner time. After dinner we devote time to debriefing the day, planning the next day, lesson on outdoor education topics, and journaling.
How old are the counselors and how are they trained?
Every leader is 21 years of age or older, and all trips have Wilderness First Responder trained staff.
What accommodations are made for campers with special needs?
All reasonable accommodations are made to include participants of varying degrees of ability and experience.
How long have you been guiding teens in the outdoors?
Allen began his guiding career in 1998 with 15 and 22- day Maine adventures. Since then he has guided nearly every season all across the USA.
Emily has participated and guided adventures on 6 continents in addition to teaching in the classroom since 2005.
Is this an overnight camp?
Yes
What does the camper’s living situation look like?
All teen adventures use the latest in backcountry accommodations. We use gear from manufacturers like The North Face, Marmot, Mountain Hardware, and MSR.
How do parents and campers communicate?
We ask that travelers are present with us during all activities, and limit phone usage to travel and in-town days. When possible, we will update our Instagram page with the day’s activities.
How does your camp handle homesickness?
We do extensive interviews and planning sessions in the spring before leaving town. If a learner becomes homesick, we will process through the situation with them, communicating with parents as needed. In all our years guiding, we have had only 1 participant out of hundreds leave a course due to homesickness.
What are the meals like at camp?
Our menu is designed by the group by preference and dietary need. Most meals are vegetarian, cooked over camp stoves in small groups when in the backcountry. When we are in frontcountry campsites, larger camp meals such as cobblers, chili, pizzas, and burritos are regular menu items. Emily is our resident foodie, and participants are sure to learn a new recipe or two on the trip!
What percentage of campers return every year?
80-100% of our travelers are on their 2nd or 3rd trip with us each year, varying by trip.
Is the schedule highly structured, or do kids have a lot of free choices?
The general outline of our activities is minimally flexible based upon contracted times for permits, but we build flexibility into our days in order to capitalize on group interests.
Is transportation available to and from camp?
Ground transport is included from the point of departure for all programs. Flights are not included in our tuition.
