Indianapolis Museum of Art announces 2016 Winter Nights Film Series

Cozy up and enjoy classic films from throughout the decades at the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s 2016 Winter Nights Film Series.

Film screenings are every Friday night, Jan. 8 through March 4, at 8 p.m. in The Toby. Themed pre-show programming, ranging from trivia contests to musical performances, will be offered prior to each film beginning at 7 p.m. Pre-show programming is part of the IMA‘s ARTx series, made possible by a gift from the Efroymson Family Fund.

The 2016 season lineup includes:

Jan. 8 – Hoosiers featuring a special appearance by the Milan team

Celebrate Indiana’s 2016 Bicentennial with an Indiana classic, and one of the most iconic sports films of all-time. Come early to watch portions of the unrestored film of the Milan High School championship game in 1954, screened by film historian Eric Grayson, who is working to restore the film. See uniforms and other props from the team and movie, courtesy the Milan ’54 Hoosiers Museum. Don’t miss a special appearance by members of the Milan team, along with other basketball surprises. Jan. 15 – The Man Who Knew Too Much with Hitchcock trivia

Experience this thriller about a family who inadvertently becomes tangled up in an assassination plot while vacationing in Morocco. Before the show, compete in Hitchcock trivia and strike your perfect Hitchcock pose in the photo booth. (1956, dir. Alfred Hitchcock, 120 mins., PG)

Jan. 22 – An outdoor screening of Miracle 

Bundle up for this special outdoor screening of Miracle, the extraordinary story of the 1980 Men’s Olympic Championship Team. Come early for hockey related games, prizes and motivational speeches. Don’t forget to wear your favorite team sweater to score a spot within special penalty box seating! (2004, dir. Gavin O’Connor, 135 mins., PG)

Jan. 29 – Control with a special performance by Unknown Pleasures 

It’s rock and roll night with this film about troubled musician Ian Curtis, who rose to fame as lead singer of the band Joy Division. After the screening, rock out at a special performance by Unknown Pleasures, Indy’s own Joy Division cover band. (2007, dir. Anton Corbijn, 122 mins., R)

Feb. 5 – The Magnificent Seven and outlaw adventures 

Grab your cowboy boots for this story of gunslingers, bandits and outlaws! Before the show, try your hand at cowboy crafts and duel like the Wild West with Nerf pistols. (1960, dir. John Sturges, 128 mins., NR)

Feb. 12 – Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb and Cold War trivia 

Experience Kubrick’s quirky wartime comedy about an insane general who triggers a path to nuclear holocaust. Show off your history knowledge with Cold War trivia before the film. (1964, dir. Stanley Kubrick, 95 mins., PG)

Feb. 19 – Boyz N the Hood with ‘90s trivia and tunes 

It’s ‘90s night with this gripping story of three friends growing up in the ghetto of inner-city Los Angeles. Compete in ‘90s trivia and enjoy hip hop tunes before the film. (1991, dir. John Singleton, 112 mins., R)

Feb. 26 – Princess Mononoke featuring an anime workshop

Participate in an anime workshop before the screening of this award-winning fantasy adventure by renowned Japanese anime director, Hayao Miyazaki. Japanese with English subtitles. (1997, dir. Hayao Miyazaki, 134 mins., PG-13)

March 4 – Speedy with Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra

$30 Adult / $25 IMA Member / $12 Student
The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra provides musical accompaniment for this classic silent film. (1928, dir. Ted Wilde, 85 mins,, NR)

Tickets are now on sale for $6 for IMA members or $12 for the public, unless otherwise noted. Season packages are available for $65 for members and $110 for the public. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the IMA Welcome Center, online at www.imamuseum.org or by phone at 317-923-1331. Tickets are also available at the door, but are not guaranteed, as some films may sell out before the day of showing. All tickets are non-refundable.
