At Easterseals Crossroads, we believe every child should have the chance to enjoy sleep-away camp. At times, children on the autism spectrum miss this wonderful opportunity. This is why we developed Camp ROCKS. Our mission is to provide a traditional sleep- away camp experience that is tailored to meet the needs of young people on the autism spectrum and connect them with others who share the same diagnosis. “Camp is the only place that I feel normal” commented one of our seasoned campers. The Camp ROCKS overnight camping experience helps build confidence for attendees and their families. Those involved discover that breaking out of usual routines can be both empowering and invigorating. At Camp ROCKS, we ensure campers are given the opportunity to experience autonomy and independence in a safe, inclusive space. Additionally, their parents and caretakers can often benefit from time spent apart from their camper. We invite children and adolescents between the ages of 10 and 18 years old to participate in archery, swimming, boating, rock wall climbing, horseback riding, crafts, and music activities. The passionate counselors at Bradford Woods spend their summers working with children with a variety of special needs. At Camp ROCKS, the camper to counselor ratio is 3:1. These gifted counselors interweave social and communication skill-building through all the traditional camp activities like camp songs, camp fires, and color wars. This year, Camp ROCKS will run from June 9 to June 14. The camp is held at Indiana University’s outdoor center Bradford Woods in Martinsville, Indiana. If you would like your child to attend 2019 Camp ROCKS, please contact Bonnie Fisher, our Autism Resource Specialist, at 317.466.1000 x2488 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
