Summer Fun: Where to go blueberry picking in Indy

It was rainy. And a little chilly for a late June morning. And my son was still half asleep {as you can tell from the photo here}, but that didn’t stop us.

Blueberry picking season has begun in Indianapolis.

When I was a kid, my mom would take us blueberry picking at a farm near our home in Michigan. I remember gripping the basket carrying our berries as if my life depended on it. When I wasn’t holding the basket, I was silently stuffing berries into my mouth. We’d take them home to make pies, cobbler, muffins and more.
To share the fun and nostalgia, here are some quick spots where your family can enjoy blueberry picking in the Indianapolis area. {Don’t forget that blueberry season typically runs through the end of July – or until all berries are picked – so get a visit to one of these on your calendar now!}

Driving Wind Blueberry Farm

Tucked off busy Michigan Road, Driving Wind has a big ‘Blueberries’ banner lining the fence but otherwise you might not notice it while driving by. The entire DWBF family was outside on the porch to greet us when we arrived, cheerily handed over our buckets and directed us to a row. There are 5 berry varieties planted and although Driving Wind is not certified organic, they do not use pesticides on their crops. Cost: $4.49/lb for 2+ pounds.

Hours: Weather permitting, 8am-1pm M-Sat with occasional evenings; Check their Facebook page for daily updates.

Location: 6410 Michigan Rd, Indianapolis

More info: facebook.com/DrivingWindFarm or call (317) 257-3001

Spencer Berry Farm

Their name says it all: This is a great one-stop shop for all your berry picking each year. Blueberries kick off again July 5th, but anyone wanting large quantities are kindly requested to preorder pre-picked from their website. Cost: U-Pick $4/lb; pre-picked $4.75/lb.

Hours: U-pick available Sundays 12-5pm. Pre-picked available at the farm store every day 10am-6pm.

Location: 7177 E. 161st St, Noblesville

More info: SpencerBerryFarm.com or call (317) 776-1560

Prelock Blueberry Farm {thanks to reader Lisa for the tip!}

Located a little outside the Indianapolis area, we hear Prelock is worth the drive. Opens officially for the blueberry-picking season on Monday, July 6th. Because the Farm is located on 4 acres of wetland, they highly recommend bringing your own bug spray with you to keep pests at bay {just don’t spray near the blueberry plants!}. Cost: You-pick $2.39/lb. Pre-picked not available.

Hours: Monday-Friday 7am-12pm and 4-8pm; Saturdays 7am-12pm

Location: 9632 E 350 S, Lafayette

More info: PrelockBlueberryFarm.com or call (765) 296-9133

No picking available but still some blue fun at Tuttle’s Orchard Blueberry Day on July 11th

If you can’t sneak away for a little you-pick time, Tuttle’s Orchard of Greenfield is planning a special Blueberry Day celebration all in one day. They’ll have samples, mini blueberry pancakes, smoothies {available at $2.95/ea}, and cases of blueberries to take home. While you’re there, shop the store for more or enjoy walking the beautiful orchard grounds. Perfect for a little family activity!

Date: Sunday, July 11

Location: 5717 N 300 W, Greenfield

More info: IndianapolisOrchard.com or call (317) 326-2278
